SIMPLE - Internal Medicine Course
Course: Internal Medicine - Clinical Reasoning
Cost: Free, but requires registration
This resource provides very good cases that require the student to work through the cases carefully while developing a differential diagnosis. These could be very useful to medical students and helpful to faculty teaching clinical reasoning. There are no lectures, or evaluation method, but the partical skills taught in this resource tend to be labor intensive. To teach clinical reasoning takes a lot of one-on-one time, but this has the potential to replace that portion which would greatly save faculty time.
Simulated Internal Medicine Patient Learning Experience (SIMPLE) is an Internal Medicine course with 36 interactive virtual case studies that slowly guide the student from the patient meeting, to differentials, and then diagnosis. This resource is used by most American medical schools to supplement learning during clerkships.
One needs to register with their university/institutional email ID in order to access the cases. Registration is free. Each case study includes self-assessment material towards the end. Students are also offered additional resources to assist them in their diagnostic process.
FACULTY TIME REQUIREMENTS
These are VERY good cases and require the student to work through the cases carefully while developing a differential diagnosis. These could be very useful to medical students and helpful to faculty teaching clinical reasoning. They should be used as an adjunct by all medical schools, and while they may not save a great deal of faculty time and effort , they will be very valuable in teaching clinical reasoning which is often a very labor intensive educational effort.
